News: New York Comic Con New Avengers Footage Shown
The New York Comic Con is in full swing as I write this and last night several members of The Avengers cast took to the stage to talk to the fans about Marvel’s and Joss Whedon’s massive blockbuster. After the trailer released on Tuesday you’d think we’d be as hyped as we could be for the assembling Avengers, but no. Those who were lucky enough to be in attendance got to see some brand new footage. Some brand new footage of a certain Bruce Banner and, well, I’ll let those who saw it explain…
Opening in an Indian village, a little girl runs down the street and towards a city. She enters a crowded house and starts begging for help from a doctor, a certain Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). He’s surrounded by sick people and asks if her family has what these poor folks have. The girl nods and holds up a fistful of cash. Bruce follows the little girl to her remote home, far away from the crowded city and into a shack. He walks through the door just in time to witness the little tyke jump out the window. It’s a trap! “Should have got the money up front, Banner.”
Shaking his head, Banner says, “You brought me to the edge of the city. Are you here to kill me Miss Romanoff? Because that’s not going to work out.”
“I’m here on behalf of SHIELD.”
“What if I say no.”
“I’ll persuade you.”
“What if the other guy says no.” (The assembled throng go wild upon hearing this. I so wish I’d been there. Sigh.)
“You’ve been two years without an accident.” says Romanoff. She reveals that Nick Fury needs Bruce’s help with a Tesseract rock, an object with enough power to destroy the Earth. SHIELD can’t find it and they need the best gamma ray scientist for the job. Banner asks if they’ll lock him up. “No one is going to put you in a cage.” Banner loses it and slams his fists down on the table,”Stop lying to me!” (The crowd go nuts again)
A terrified Black Widow quick-draws a gun from nowhere and points it at Bruce. Banner calms himself and says they can do this without getting “him” involved. Placated, Natasha orders everyone to stand down. It cuts to outside and the shack is surrounded by loads of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, guns all aimed at the hut.
That’s not all, though. Nope. The audience also got an extended trailer sequence. It opens with a helicopter landing on New York’s Stark Building. Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) voice over does a neat little round up of the assembled Avengers (You might remember this from the Disney Expo in August). He says –
“Let’s do a head count. A couple of master assassins, a demi-god, a living legend who kind of lives up to the legend. And you, big fella, have managed to piss off every single one of them.” If you remember from last time it turns out that Stark is talking to Loki (Tom Hiddleston). “I have an army,” replies Loki, menacingly. The screen cuts to black and up pops The Avengers logo. Another scene follows where Stark zaps Banner with a little stun gun. Stark wonders if Banner has a “lid on it (the big green angry guy)” and asks what his secret is for containing “it”, some mellow jazz? Captain America reacts angrily and asks if everything is joke to Stark. Tony replies:, “Funny things are.”
After the footage, there was a Q&A session. Here are some of the choice answers –
Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios producer, said said they’re busy prepping Iron Man 3, which’ll begin phase two of The Avengers (if all goes well).
Feige will be a post-credit scene after The Avengers, it’s become something of a tradition.
Tom Hiddleston, by far the most popular member of the panel apparently, reveals that Loki with get into a smackdown with all the Avengers individually, and that every fight scene will different and unique from the other. He wouldn’t choose which was his favourite, the big tease.
Joss Whedon couldn’t make it to the panel because he was too busy editing the movie.
So, yeah, it’s sounding unbelievably good. Marvel Studios are bringing everything together brilliantly and have us fans eating from their kindly hands.
The Avengers opens here in the UK on the 27th April and, say this quietly, may have a good chance of being better than The Dark Knight Rises.
