Feature: “Guys, I’m Bringing The Party To You” – The Avengers Trailer Breakdown
Wednesday saw the release of The Avengers trailer, the first of the three summer tentpole superhero movies. It is EPIC. Honest. Check it out.
Anyway, this the breakdown of the trailer that I promised. It contains more than NINETY screen caps and many of my insane theories about the film. I hope you enjoy.
Opening with an aerial shot, we see a devastated New York street .
People run through the destruction.
Trying to escape the havoc. I especially like the blonde girl in front of the taxi cab trying not to smile. Good actress.
Flaming debris fall from the sky while Samuel L. Jackson intones “War has started…”
Nick Fury! He continues “…and we are hopelessly outgunned”. There’s Captain America (Chris Evans) in the background.
The Army rolls in. Can they do anything against the unseen threat?
A gunner opens fire, but we don’t see on what. Things look dire.
Yay, Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg)! He says “Director Fury, I think it’s time”. Again Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is in the background.
Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) looks pensive. Is it time enact the Avengers Initiative?
You’ll remember this sequence from the end of Captain America: The First Avenger. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) takes out a punchbag.
Rogers asks of Fury “You here with the mission, sir? Trying to get me back in the world?”.
Fury replies “Trying to save it”. Is the first Avenger the first onboard?
This is the section that was mentioned at New York Comic Con last year. An Indian village where Dr Bruce Banner is hiding out helping the sick and needy.
The stunning Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow is in the shack. She confronts Banner and says “Doctor, we need you to come in.”
Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) replies “What if I say no?” We are then treated to some awesome footage of him Hulking out.
Remember, don’t make him angry…
…You wouldn’t like him when he’s angry.
THE HULK!!! Is he the second superhero to sign up?
Back to the shack and Black Widow answers Banner’s question “I’ll persuade you”, while outside the shack is surrounded by S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives.
Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the God Of Thunder, the only person worthy to wield the mighty Mjolnir.
Thor enquires of Fury “What are asking me to do?”. I like this. It sounds like Thor is reticent to do what Fury wants. Remember, the big bad in the movie is Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Thor’s brother. If he’s being told to stop his brother, no matter what, will Thor be willing to do it? In his
Thor calls for Mjolnir and it smashes through some scenery.
If there was any doubt Thor was the God Of Thunder…
The Chrysler Building is struck by lightning. What are you up to, Thor?
A pair of Quinjets land upon the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier. This is about as much as we’ve seen so far. They’re keeping it secret for the film. Bastards.
On the deck of the helicarrier, Steve Rogers shakes hands with Bruce Banner as Black Widow watches on. Nick Fury says over the top “It’s the Avengers Initiative”.
The Stark Tower! It looks stunning.
Iron Man flies up the side of Stark Tower in New York.
Iron Man lands atop the tower (see the Chrysler Building in the background?)…
… and removes his armour…
… to reveal Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) underneath.
Stark says of the Initiative “I thought I didn’t qualify. Apparently, I’m – what was it? – volatile, self-obsessed, and don’t play well with others.”
Thor readies himself…
… Iron Man fires his repulsors…
… launches at Thor…
…and kicks him through a tree. Iron Vs. Thor! Flip, yeah! And it’s not even over yet!
Iron Man flying through the air…
…and smacks Thor upside the head!
Coulson says to Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) “I think they need a timeout”.
Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America face off. Might put this one as my wallpaper.
The Quinjet races through stormy clouds…
…Thor lands on the wing…
…and looks bad-ass.
The Captain, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and Black Widow walk down the hangar deck of the helicarrier, which you’ll remember from this pic released last week.
Ah, Scar-Jo as Black Widow…
…swinging from pillar to post…
…and lashes out in a rage at Hawkeye?! That’s definitely the glove he wears. So what’s going on here? We know the big bad is Loki, the God Of Mischief. Is he using his powers to imitate members of the super team in a nefarious scheme to tear them apart? Also, it was rumoured for a long time that Loki would be assisted by the Skrull, an alien race of shapeshifters. That said, the kibosh was put on that theory by Fox owning the rights to the Skrull. So, who makes up the army that Loki mentions at the end of the SuperBowl advert?
An explosion throws Banner (you can tell by the purple shirt) and possibly Nick Fury through a plate-glass window. Is Loki’s plan coming to fruition?
Captain America leaps from the back from a Quinjet.
Iron Man flies in and lands spectacularly while Captain America stumbles in the background.
Another wallpaper opportunity. I love the pose, the little nicks and scratches on the armour, and dulled reflections. Talk about photorealistic CGI.
Tom Hiddleston’s Loki! He’s been saying throughout “How desperate are you that you call on such lost creatures to defend you?”
Question: What happens when Thor’s irresistible force, in the shape the mighty Mjolnir, meets the immovable object of Cap’s vibranium shield?
In answer to Loki’s question, Fury answers “You have made me very desperate”.
A dapper looking Loki (with his pimp cane) forces the people of New York to bow down before him.
A blurry shot of Loki’s forces laying waste to New York. Who are they? How did Loki convince them to attack and invade Earth? Are they and Loki working for an even higher power?
A sweaty Black Widow looking somewhat concerned.
Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) takes aim.
A seriously pissed off Hulk chases Black Widow.
Captain America and Tony Stark have a word. It might be the scene that was mentioned at New York Comic Con where an angry Cap confronts Stark and asks if everything is a joke. Stark’s reply “Funny things are”.
Banner says “We’re not a team. We’re a time bomb”. This is classic Joss Whedon territory. Dysfunctional family unit? Check. Witty banter and spiky conflict between members? Check. World-ending threat? Check. It’s all there.
The Hulk! There he goes, smashing everything, as is his want. Can you see a hint of Mark Ruffalo in that roaring face?
The Hulk leaps through the air and takes out the invading alien craft.
Check out the metal protrusions in the middle. I want you to remember them for later, okay? Anyway, Thor, Captain America, and Black Widow battle a huge metal thing…
… which engulfs them in flame. Good ol’ boy Captain America shields Black Widow from the fire.
Thor bellows “No!” and appears trapped. Could it be in the Hulk-proof cage that was mentioned way back at the Disney Expo? I like this bit in particular because it reminds me of Mark Millar’s The Ultimates, on which a lot of Marvel’s recent superhero movie output has been based. *POSSIBLE SPOILER* In The Ultimates 2 Loki tricks the rest of the superhero team into believing that Thor is a delusional crackpot and needs to be locked up. Could this be what’s happening here? *SPOILER OVER*
A helicopter lifts into the sky as S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters collapses. Could this be the power of the Cosmic Cube in action?
Thor, in full battle-ready God armour, looking thoroughly pissed off.
What do you think is Loki’s motivation for invading Earth? Is it in preparation for an attack on Asgard, Thor and Loki’s home? Is that why he needs the Cosmic Cube? Or, as I hinted before, is there an even greater power guiding Loki and his forces? Remember, the Infinity Gauntlet was briefly glimpsed in the movie Thor. Could Marvel be introducing us to Thanos?
This blurry shot was the best I could get of Loki’s alien army. Who do they look like to you?
Another epic wallpaper shot here, I think. Hawkeye falling from a building while firing an arrow. Borrows heavily from The Ultimates. Artist Bryan Hitch drew something very similar to this.
Thor lends a hand to the Captain. Is the team finally learning to work together?
A battle-scarred Iron Man. Even more scratches and chipped paint. My brain cannot except that this armour on exist inside a computer. It looks so real! I want it.
So begins a hyperkinetic sequence where Stark battles the alien invaders, flying between the city’s skyscrapers…
… he afterburns into the sky towards a giant ship. It’s firing blue blasts of energy, similar to the ones seen at the S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ earlier. Is it the Cosmic Cube in action?
Iron Man tries to avoid the blasts but eventually gets hit.
Unconscious or without power, Iron Man falls helplessly…
… but is caught by The Incredible Hulk!
The two non-superpowered members of the team, Hawkeye and Black Widow, share a moment…
Black Widow says “This is nothing we were ever trained for”. Demi-Gods, aliens, and world-destroying weapons? No, I very much doubt super-assassins were trained to deal with that.
And so begins the famous group shot. The Hulk roars! You can definitely see Mark Ruffalo’s looks in this version. Also, The Hulk’s voice is said to be supplied by Lou Ferrigno, the original Incredible Hulk from the TV series! Stan Lee told us that at London Super Comic Con.
It’s pretty frickin’ awesome seeing The Avengers together like this. Thank you, Marvel. Thank you, Joss!
The Avengers! Or Avengers Assemble here in the UK, for some mad reason. But wait, that’s not the end of the trailer…
Thor and Captain America look up overhead. You’ll remember this shot was released back in October.
Stark says “Guys, I’m bringing the party to you”.
Scar-Jo’s Black Widow sees what’s coming…
Phew, it’s just Iron Man.
Jesus Christ monkey balls! What the hell is THAT?
Checkout the sticky-out metal bits. Is that what Thor and Cap were fighting earlier before being engulfed in flame.
So, there we have it. A complete breakdown of the trailer. It shows us a lot but reveals little. We know little about the plot other than Loki’s invasion scheme. It leaves us a lot more to discover about the film. Brilliant.
If you have any theories or want to point out anything I’ve missed, let me know below. Can’t wait to know what you all think.
The Avengers, or Avengers Assembled, opens here in the UK on 26th April.
