Weekly Ricochet: The Avengers, The Bourne Legacy, Only God Forgives, Moonrise Kingdom, The Amazing Spider-Man…
We start off this week’s Ricochet by taking a look at some pics of the wonderfully named Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D Agent Maria Hill. Marvel.com released these shots into the wild not long after The Avengers trailer hit computer screens the world over and got itself download over THIRTEEN MILLION TIMES.
Smulders makes a brief appearance in the trailer, which you can see in our breakdown here. We know little about Maria Hill other than what Cobie revealed in an interview a few months back, namely she’s hyperintelligent and may have special superpowers of her own. Interesting.
Jeremy Renner is the current movie franchise king. Recently appearing with Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and eyed as a possible replacement for Mr Toothy Grin, he’s also in the summer’s first big superhero flick, The Avengers, playing master assassin Hawkeye. And, of course, he’s the new lead in the Bourne series, taking over from Matt Damon as Kenneth Kitson in The Bourne Legacy. He’s a very busy guy as this new pic from The Bourne Legacy shows. He’s sliding between walls to get between shoots and honour his agreements. Gosh bless, Mr Renner.
If you’re a follower of The Shootening, you may have seen me recently extolling the virtues of Nicholas Winding Refn’s Drive. It is a wonderful film you really must see. Get on it. Anyway, Mr Refn and monosyllabic star of Drive, Ryan Gosling, have re-teamed for a new film – Only God Forgives. Above if the first shot released from the shoot.
The film, pitched as a Western set in Bangkok, tells the story of Julian (Gosling), a fugitive who runs a boxing club that’s also a front for a drug smuggling ring. Hoping to find redemption, Julian challenges an ex-cop known only as “The Angel Of Vengeance” to a boxing match, at the same time knowing that “The Angel…” had killed his brother. Kristin Scott Thomas is also attached as Julian’s mother, the head of a crime syndicate, who urges Julian to get revenge. Sounds like the similar B-movie plot that Refn had with Drive, but made something special with his artistry, care, and attention to detail. Here’s hoping Only God Forgives is something special too.
Three new pics from Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom have been released courtesy of Empire. The first features the young stars Kara Hayward and Jarred Gilman as Suzy and Sam.
Next up is a nice shot of Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Ed Norton, and even Anderson stalwart Bill Murray hiding away on the left there.
And the third is of the ace Ed Norton and his troop of scouts discovering Jarred Gilman’s Sam is missing.
And finally, here’s the unused title sequence from The Amazing Spider-Man. What do you think? Personally I’m glad they didn’t go with it. Reminds me too much of Raimi’s Spider-Man titles. It’s good that they’ve tried to make a break from the earlier films.
