Weekly Ricochet: The Dark Knight Rises, RoboCop, Cogan’s Trade/Killing Them Softly, Iron Man 3, Casa De Mi Padre…
We’re back with the Weekly Ricochet and we’re opening with a flipping epic pic of Batman from The Dark Knight Rises. Christian Bale is pulling his fiercest, most comic book-like pose ever as The Bat. I love it. We’ve had a lengthy trailer from both The Amazing Spider-Man and The Avengers, isn’t it time Chris Nolan gave us The Dark Knight Rises one?
The RoboCop remake is going ahead. The new version of Paul Verhoeven’s darkly comic sci-fi satire is to be directed by Jose Padilha and the role of Murphy has been handed to Joel Kinnaman, most recently seen in another remake – TV series The Killing. Sony even announced a release date of 9th August 2013. The first RoboCop is a stone-cold classic, the sequels tainted the brand somewhat. Is that enough to justify a remake? I was interested when Darren Aronofsky linked nearly four years ago, but now? I couldn’t care less. What do you guys think? Let us know.
Andrew Dominik, director of the phenomenal The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, is back working with Brad Pitt on new film called Cogan’s Trade. Or at least that’s what we though it was called. It’s now being reported that the film has been retitled Killing Them Softly. Now, I didn’t think there was anything wrong with Cogan’s Trade but neither do I find Killing Them Softly entirely off-putting. No, it’s Dominik and Pitt who excite me about this film. They could be making a picture together called Scary Movie 7 or Garden State and I’d still wanna see it.
So, The Avengers/Avengers Assemble hype machine is in full swing after the release of recent kick-ass trailer, but did you know that Iron Man 3 is about enter production? Yup, Robert Downey Jr. is stepping into the suit again, this time with Shane Black taking the directorial reins. As is the way with these huge blockbusters, the production of picture has been given a code name – Caged Heat. There has been plenty of speculation as to whether that name is an allusion the new villain of the film (Crimson Dynamo possibly?) or RDJ and Black having a laugh by naming it after the classic Roger Corman prison exploitation flick. Whatever the reason, I’m glad it’s filming because after the release of Whedon’s Avengers I was beginning to wonder what the heck I was going to write about.
And to finish, we have a clip from Funny Or Die of Will Ferrell’s Casa De Mi Padre, his brand new comedy that’s entirely in Spanish. Think what you like about Will Ferrell as a performer, I think it’s an incredibly ballsy move on his part to release a subtitled movie like this in the US. It hits screens on 16th May, but sadly there is still no UK release for this film.
