News: Sony Pressing Ahead With Venom, Chronicle Director Josh Trank Being Circled
I haven’t had the opportunity to see Chronicle yet. From what I’ve heard it’s a fine superhero movie that isn’t a superhero movie, and does well within the increasingly over-used ‘found footage’ genre. It’ll come as no surprise then that Chronicle director Josh Trank is being circled by Sony to head up its Spider-Man spin-off, Venom.
Venom, if you haven’t read the comics or seen Spider-Man 3 (and I don’t blame you if you haven’t), is the alien symbiote that tried to bond and take over Peter Parker. Having failed, it melds with rival reporter Eddie Brock and becomes the Venom we all know and love. Well, not in Spidey 3, obvs. It seems Sony are desperate to jump on the superhero bandwagon but are limited to just The Amazing Spider-Man at the mo’. Venom is the studios response.
Of course, Venom is an evil near-unstoppable villain in Marvel’s Universe. Sony’s intention is to turn the character into more of an anti-hero. Whether that can be done is another question entirely.
