News: Iron Man 3 Casting News
With The Avengers doing stupendous business at the box office it’s easy to forget that Iron Man 3 is due to start filming in North Carolina and China in a few short weeks with Shane Black at the helm, taking over from Jon Favreau. Robert Downey Jr. will once again don the armour and Gwyneth Paltrow is due to return as Pepper Potts, but who else will be joining them? Find out after the break…
First up, Sir Ben Kingsley has signed on to the film. The internet speculation as to whom his character will be has been rife and obvious – The Mandarin. In the comic book the character was a powerful foe of Iron Man’s who used ten magic rings in an attempt to take over the world. In the films, though, The Ten Rings is a terrorist group or militia type force. It is assumed that The Mandarin is the leader of this group.
Next up, Guy Pearce has signed on too. About to be seen as Peter Weyland in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, Pearce is said to be playing a scientist by the name of Aldrich Killian. Killian develops the nanotechnology that is rumoured to play a big part in Iron Man 3‘s storyline. When that technology falls into the wrong hands, it’s up to Stark to stop it.
This isn’t certain yet, as Jessica Chastain recently dropped out citing scheduling conflicts, but it seems that Rebecca Hall is close to signing on to the film. Best known for her role in Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige, Hall is due to be cast as Dr. Maya Hansen, another scientist who, along with Pearce’s Killian, develops the nanotechnology.
So there we have it. Some very interesting casting from Marvel Studios and Shane Black. I mean, Sir Ben Kingsley is a little, um, predictable but Pearce and Hall seem like fantastic choices. I’m genuinely interested in where Iron Man 3 goes after the epic size and scale of The Avengers. Something smaller and more intimate (relatively, for a superhero movie anyway) might be what we need.
Iron Man 3 has yet to start filming but is due to hit screen on the 3rd May 2013.
