Depending on your perspective, Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the finest or most self-indulgent writer/directors of his generation. Everybody loves Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy don’t they? You’d be an utter dick if you didn’t, wouldn’t you? Um… Look, I don’t HATE Anchorman or, indeed, Will Ferrell. I just find his schtick a little… easy. Pompous, successful idiot man-child falls and learn a lesson. There’s the plot to sixteen of his movies. Oh, and just stick the camera on him and his buddies while they ‘improv’ non sequiturs. That’s awesome! Or, you know, just write a fucking script, you lazy shits. ANYWAY, you kids love Anchorman (my twitter account will attest to a quote on an almost daily basis) so I won’t rob you of the news of the sequel – Anchorman: The Legend Continues, because I’m one of the good guys, however strong my contrarian feelings are. Killing Them Softly, formerly known as Cogan’s Trade, is director Andrew Dominik’s long-awaited third feature after wowing us with the likes of Chopper and the truly wonderful The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. Once again teaming with Brad Pitt, the film follows Pitt’s mob enforcer tasked with finding the thieves that dared to rob a high stakes poker game attended by some very ruthless people. Read more »
FIFTY YEARS. That’s how long James Bond has been on our screens. Introduced at the height of the Cold War, he’s seen out communism, disco, and reinvented himself in the face of the world’s latest global threat – terrorism. It’s amazing that an amoral British state-sanctioned assassin could have this kind of lasting world-wide appeal. Or IS it? Anyway, Skyfall is the latest in the super spy’s adventures and last week saw the release of the new poster above.
