I told you yesterday – It’s here, it’s here! IT’S FINALLY HERE! Yes, after months and month of waiting we have the first trailer for Dredd. Sometimes people deserve to have their faith rewarded.

Thoughts? Firstly, I like Karl Urban, I think he does a good job being gruff and bad-ass, though the voice edges perilously close to Clint Eastwood parody. The helmet doesn’t look AS bad in the darker palette of the movie, but still appears to be a little… big. Olivia Thirlby is very Anderson like, that pleases me. Some of the shots do Mega City One justice, displaying the epic scale of the megalopolis. It seems to be based on Dredd’s early comic run, with familiar skyscraper buildings, not the bulbous rockcrete behemoths we see in the comic these days. I like the favela/shanty town look, class and the divide between the haves and the have-nots has always been a theme of Judge Dredd. That said, I’m not sure of the use of contemporary vehicles. It was probably a budget decision, but it doesn’t scream “future!” to me.

You know what, I’m cautiously optimistic. The drug Slo-Mo may be a gimmick to allow the film to go into gratuitous, bloody, Michael Bay-esque shots, but I’m liking the look and the feel on the film. After Stallone’s version and the talk of unrest in post-production, expectations couldn’t be much lower, so if this turns out to be a fun Friday night type movie, I’ll be very happy.
