News: Universal Pictures To Go Big With Franchises And Animation
It’s the one hundred year anniversary of Universal Pictures. If you’ve watched any of their films recently, it’s hard to escape the fact. The recent release of Jaws on Blu-Ray takes nearly sixteen years to begin for all the Universal promos banging on. Skip it? Yeah, you think you’re getting the movie and then they trick you with ANOTHER clip of a film you don’t want to see. I want the shark, not Robert Redford. I know, I’m being harsh, but don’t bug us with other films when we’ve paid good money for this one. Anyway, Universal Pictures CEO Steve Burke says they’re going to focus on “franchises and animation”.
It begins with the next entry in the Fast and Furious due for release in 2013, and Burke announced sequels to mixed The Bourne Legacy and Seth McFarlane comedy Ted. The latest Bourne feature, starring Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz and the first without Matt Damon, didn’t exactly set the box office alight with its performance so it’s a bit of a surprise it’s getting a follow-up. Ted is less surprising as it did do well, but personally the thought of having to sit through another of McFarlane’s lazy pieces of schtick terrifies me. I mean, just watching the trailer confirmed everything I feared the film would be. As for the animation side of things, Universal Pictures hope to produce two films a year, pointing to the success of Despicable Me.
Now far be it from me to point this out, but after sitting through days and days of Universal’s bragging about the good ol’ days before I could watch Jaws, this news feels like they’re playing it very safe. Where are the exciting new films and original titles? Too much of a risk. And that’s a bit sad.
I’ll keep you posted on any Bourne news. As for everything else? I couldn’t care less.
