Hot on the heels of Empire’s Avengers exclusive covers, Marvel.com have released five new top quality pics from Joss Whedon’s gigantic new movie. Let’s take a look.

Big Sam Jackson rocking it as Nick Fury. The last thing you want to do is fuck with this guy. Yeah, I swore.

Case in point, check out the scars around his eye. Is this the first time we’ve got a real good look at it? Has it always been that bad or is getting worse? Will we get an inkling as to what happened to it? My guess is they’ll be saving that for a potential Nick Fury/S.H.I.E.L.D. movie.

Nick Fury  asks the Cap Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) to join the Avengers Initiative. Joss Whedon revealed recently that the story of The Avengers will take place from the perspective of Captain America. That’s a really good move in my opinion. Steve Rogers is as new to this world as some viewers will be and he’ll help guide them through Marvel’s crazy universe.

A relaxed Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) hang out. Banner’s shirt is the same purple colour of The Hulk’s pants in the comic. I’ve got a feeling that Downey Jr. may own this film. All the star wattage that surrounds may encourage him to push his performance to ridiculous levels. Here’s hoping.

Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), the two non-superpowered Avengers, share a moment. This seems a pretty cool scene. There were hints in past interviews that there would be a bond between the two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and this appears to show it. That said, could this be the last time we see Renner as Hawkeye? He’s already the star of the new Bourne film, and the rumours are he’s set to take over from Tom Cruise in the Mission Impossible franchise. Would Renner have time for, or even want to star in, a S.H.I.E.L.D. spin-off? Hm. We’ll see.

There we go! Hope you liked. They seem pretty decent. That said, where was Thor? We all love a bit of The God Of Thunder.

The Avengers rumbles its way onto UK screens from the 4th May.

A quick update on Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. We’ve got the international poster we can see above. Not a lot different from the one released late last year,  you get a better view of THE BIG GIANT HEAD. Less shrouded in dark in this time. There’s an ear! That’s new, right? Anyway, that’s not all we have. We have a new pic too. Check it out.

There we go. THE BIG GIANT HEAD again, but surrounded by jars. Eerily reminiscent of the egg room in Alien. Could it be the essence of the Space Jockeys contained within? Probably not, but the brilliant io9 has flipping ace breakdown on everything known about the Space Jockeys and is well worth a read if you’re interested in Prometheus or not.

Prometheus will burst onto UK screens on the 1st June.

Official Pictures From Ridley Scott’s Prometheus

Birds fall from the sky, a horse collapses to the ground dying, sparks fly from Kirsten Dunst’s fingers, and we see the destruction of Earth by the looming giant blue planet Melancholia. All this in super slo-mo to a Wagnerian score. It’s beautiful and bleak. And all in the first ten minutes.

Melancholia is, of course, a Lars Von Trier film, so you don’t go into it expecting a magical journey of sunshiney smiles. What follows is the tale of two sisters, Justine (Kirsten Dunst) Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg), as their lives fall apart, one due to an overwhelming depression, the other because of the imminent destruction of Earth. The film, split into two halves, begins at the wedding reception of Justine. Apparently happily married to a very sweet and good-matured man, Michael (Alexander Skarsgård), it doesn’t take too long for (what should be) Justine’s happiest day to unravel. Awkward pronouncements by family and friends sour the atmosphere, before Justine’s depression leads to a series of self-destructive actions.

The second half of the film focuses on Claire, as she struggles to care for a near-catatonic Justine, and the threat of newly discovered planet, Melancholia, as it orbit brings it perilously close to Earth. Her husband, John (Kiefer Sutherland), is a pompously rational man who maintains there’s nothing to fear while whispering and constantly looking into telescopes. Justine, on the other hand, seems to know the end is nigh and is accepting of the fate of the planet. Claire, caught between the two, slowly tears herself apart.

Von Trier has certainly moved on since Dogme 95 days. Melancholia, the giant blue planet, looms ominously, much like the condition after which it is named, and is wonderfully and inspiringly shot. The opening sequence I mentioned at the start of the review will be copied a million times, I’m sure. And this coupled with Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde as the score, the film is almost operatic. I also found Kirsten Dunst’s performance to be one of her best. That smile she once gave Peter in the Spider-Man films now hiding a world of sadness. Her Justine is beautiful but broken.

But these moments are out-weighed by clunky unrealistic dialogue and some very average acting. The cast appear to be very aware they’re in a Lars Von Trier film, “He appreciates actors and acting so I will act like I’ve never acted before!”. What we end up with is John Hurt gadding about, Kiefer Sutherland grumbling stiltedly while occasionally pointing at the nearing doom planet, and Stellan Skarsgård chewing his way through every scene as an arsehole of an ad exec who turns up at the wedding reception and tries to force Justine to come up with a new tagline for a campaign. This self-conciousness did nothing for my suspension of disbelief, and I found it all a little ridiculous.

I have no problem with the bleakness, sometimes it’s good to have your soul broken, but I needed something to relate to. One emotional connection. There were none. I simply ended up being bored by it all.

I will always be thankful for people like Lars Von Trier out there, whipping up the hornets’ nest, and making films like these. Lord knows, in the cookie-cutter cineplexes we need something different, but I never thought I would find the end of the world to be so dull.

Melancholia is out on Blu-Ray and DVD now.

I have to admit, I really didn’t think we’d be writing all that much about The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo after the release of the US version. I mean, it’s great (see my review here), but everything has been pretty much covered, hasn’t it? Apparently not. Nope, you see, DC want in on Stieg Larsson’s moneyspinner too, and their adult off-shoot, Vertigo, is producing a graphic novel for each the Millennium trilogy. Wanna see the cover?

You know what I’m gonna ask – What do you think? Personally, I feel The Girl… is a perfect fit for the comic format. C’mon, a punky/alternative bisexual hacker who can kick-ass? That’s straight up comic book shit right there. But, looking at this cover, I have one big problem: This Lisbeth Salander is too pretty. Now I know neither Noomi Rapace or Rooney Mara could be considered the remotest bit ugly, but there was always a hint of masculinity to Rapace, and Fincher’s make-over of Mara was a deliberate attempt to subvert her girl-next-door image (more of which I’ll talk about down below). This Salander, though, looks like Catwoman, but with piercings. Hey, that’s just me. Feel free to comment below and let me know how incredibly wrong I am. I always like that.

It would be bad form to talk about The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and not mention Rooney Mara’s Oscar nomination for best actress. Well done! It’s a fantastic performance. Will she win? No, Meryl Streep’s impression of Thatcher the Milk Snatcher has that pretty much sewn up. Ah well.

Before we go, there was a couple of interesting little bits of info from Rooney and director Fincher about the look of their Lisbeth Salander. Mara didn’t want one bit of detail to go amiss. She said, “There was a lot of discussion that went into my merkin for the movie, because I was naked quite a lot.” Was she? *cough* ”And I don’t think a lot of people will notice all of the attention that went into that. But there was a lot of discussions around that. Well, you know, in the book she’s meant to have strawberry-blonde hair originally and she dyes it, so we had a special merkin made that was, you know, strawberry-blonde so that it would fit.” I’m going to see it again in a couple of weeks. I’ll keep a look out.

And David Fincher was very specific on where Rooney’s real-life, no Hollywood magic here, piercings would go. He says, “Rooney’s a beautiful girl. She can look like Audrey Hepburn, but she can also look like a boy. So we’d decide where we wanted to put the stud through her eyebrow by asking, ‘Where is it going to be most in the way? Where is the most distracting place?’” And what of the, ahem, nipple piercing? “We had to be really sure that the nipple piercing was in the place where it was going to catch the light.”

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Graphic Novel hits shelves in November, and the movie is out now at cinemas.

So, last night I dreamt my friend, @BunchOfSteve, and I were invited to see the première of The Dark Knight Rises. No, true story. I’m not making this up for an interesting intro. I would never do that. Anyway, we were watching the film and it was AWFUL. I mean, George Lucas could have done better. Turned out Chris Nolan had made the film deliberately dreadful as part of an elaborate practical joke… and then I woke up. What’s this got to do with anything? Well, not a lot, but we may have a name for Batman’s new flying vehicle and some fairly big spoilers too.

Firstly, what is this thing gonna be called? We’ve all been happy calling it the Batwing, happy in the tradition that all Batman’s flying vehicles have been called that (probably). As we know, though, Nolan isn’t one for tradition. His Batmobile was called The Tumbler, his Batcycle the Batpod. What has his Chrisiness settled on for the big black flying thing of doom pictured up there? According to a leaked tie-in toy, it’s simply called The Bat. I like it. To the point. And I bet it finally gives Morgan Freeman’s Lucius Fox a chance to say the ‘B-word’. Expect to be rolling in the aisles when he finally says it.

We all know by now that Marion Cottilard has been cast in the film as Miranda Tate, but there’s  been a swirling of rumours for many many months as to whether that was cover for who she was really playing. Things got a little clearer this week when little Joey King revealed that she was playing a young Talia Al Ghul. Could this be the confirmation we need that Marion is playing the Batman Begins villain Ra’s Al Ghul’s daughter? I say YES.

And speaking of Ra’s Al Ghul, Liam Neeson revealed that he had been on set during the filming of The Dark Knight Rises! Here’s what he had to say – “”I can tell you nothing about Dark Knight Rises, seriously. I was on set for maybe an hour-and-a-half and the director didn’t tell me anything of what it’s about. So, I’m being very honest when I say I have no idea what’s going to happen.” I think you can put a big giant tick next to the Ra’s Al Ghul appearing in The Dark Knight Rises box, even if it is in a brief flashback sequence. Sweet.

Catwoman – First Official Look

Coriolanus, directed by and starring the nasally ominous Ralph Fiennes [raif-ines], is a Shakespearean tragedy that focuses on a man who makes war with foreign countries, his own country and more or less anyone within a five metre radius.

But is it any cop?

Ralph clearly wants his audiences and critics to marvel at both his ferocious characterisation
of Coriolanus and appreciate how clever he is for transplanting the action from ancient Rome to a faux-Balkan warzone, so he reminds us how ‘relevant’ it all is by relentlessly shaking the camera about, pushing it into the actors faces and allowing the image to frequently go out of focus, like it’s some student-filmed documentary.

Unfortunately, because this is Shakespeare, the actors are all so giddy with the opportunity to use their proper actor-voices that they were forced to learn when they were all at RADA that the atmosphere of contemporary reality is lost the instant that somebody opens their mouth and it’s never recovered.

Raffles as Coriolanus is out-and-out the worst offender, offering us a characterisation of the central protagonist that belly-flops between upper-class nostrillic monotony and quite possibly the best impression of Leonard Rossiter I’ve ever seen.

Oddly, there are tangents to his portrayal that can be paralleled with his performance in Red Dragon. But unlike Riff-Raff’s ‘Tooth Fairy’, his Coriolanus never feels especially dangerous, unless you have a fear of middle-aged paunches on skinny men.

Of the other actors roped into this, I don’t quite know what it was that was playing Corio’s wife. I think it may have been a breadknife with some marmalade on it.

Brian Cox is honest-to-god his own biggest fan that you can almost feel how disappointed he is that he’s not sat in the audience with you, watching you enjoy how good he is. Plus, can anyone tell me when he stopped listening to the wardrobe department and just started showing up in the same clothes to every film?

Gerard Butler looks consistently uneasy and a bit lost, but then every film he’s made since his breakout role in 300 has been a load of crap, so we can’t blame him for feeling scared.

But it would be unfair and untrue to say it was all bad.

Vanessa Redgrave, James Nesbitt and, scarily, Jon Snow are all genuinely fantastic in this.  They breathe Shakespeare’s lines as though they’re using everyday language and achieve the level of verisimilitude that Raffles was clearly aiming for when he decided to set the whole thing in Modern Warfare 2.

Now, I like  a bit of Shakespeare, so don’t mistake me for some attention-depleted war film addict who feels cheated because of ‘all the talking’.

Likewise, I’m not a portfolio-thumping purist of Elizabethan drama. I very much enjoyed the BBC’s Shakespeare Retold a few years back and Ian McKellan’s Richard III remains a happy movie memory (I’ve not watched it since it was released, so it might be crap and I reserve the right to revise this point should I watch it again anytime soon).

But  Coriolanus is, despite the fawning of the press, yet another object lesson in what happens when you let an actor run off with the cameras: an indulgent, lumbering misfire that confuses tone with style and fails to establish either.

Despite a hefty amount of showboating (spitting) from the lead, it  brings absolutely nothing new to the canon of Shakespeare on film and, at best, it has a bright future in the classrooms of uninspired teachers to torture their GCSE and A-Level students with.

Coriolanus is out in cinemas right now.

The Blair Witch Project has a lot to answer for. If not for its spectacular box office return on a minuscule budget, we would have been spared the current flood of ‘found footage’ films. Don’t get me wrong, I’m one of the few people who seemingly enjoyed Blair Witch, but it seems that everyone is at it these days. The fourth Paranormal Activity film is on its way. The first one is okay, I suppose, if you like your scares utterly predictable. But do we need four? How many camcorder shots of open doors do we need? We’ve also had big budget monster flick, Cloverfield. It trashed New York. Where do we go from there? Well, it seems the answer is the forests of Norway with Troll Hunter.

Three students of the Volda University investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding the deaths of bears in Norway. They follow a strange hunter by the name of Hans, and accuse him of somehow being involved in the deaths. Hans tries to flee from the filmmakers, driving across the country, but when following him into the woods late one night, they find out the truth – Hans is a troll hunter.

The highlights of the film come from the mythos, and unsurprisingly, the trolls themselves. Hans asks each of the filmmakers if they are Christian, because “Trolls can smell the blood of a Christian man” (something of a joy to us atheists). There’s also a great bit on a bridge involving three goats… The troll designs are fantastic, combining taking the traditional fairytale look, big noses, gruff and grunting, completely hairy, or skyscraper massive, and adding the perfect foresty or mountainous camouflage for their environment. They are familiar but at the same time otherworldly. The flaws are the same for every found footage film, and they don’t change here – the characters never act the way a sane or reasonable human would. If you can suspend your disbelief for that then you should be fine.

Troll Hunter is an enjoyable bit of fluff. It’s good without ever really excelling in any department. It cranks the tension a few times, but never scares or terrifies. The action scenes pass by, but don’t ever get the blood pumping the way it should. Don’t go into it expecting too much and you’ll find a fine way to pass a couple of hours.

Wait, is this a spoof of Robert Rodriguez’ El Mariachi, Desperado, and Once Upon A Time In Mexico? Anyone get the feeling that this is spoofing the spoof, kinda like the Scream/Scary Movie movies? Yeah, okay, I realise I’m being a dick and overly harsh because I have Will Ferrell issues. In all honesty, if the film is in Spanish/subtitled all the way through, I think that is INCREDIBLY brave of Ferrell and co. considering how subtitled films are generally thought of in the big ol’ US of A. Here’s hoping it’s good and that it’s a success.

Casa De Mi Padre has no official UK release date yet, but hits US screens on 16th March.

The slow drip feed of pics from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus continues. Last week USA Today had an exclusive shot from the film, amongst their many from upcoming blockbusters. 

Here’s Noomi Rapace as Elizabeth Shaw. Loving the fringe. It’s kinda hard to make out what’s going on in this pic (what’s the glowing thing on the right? A torch? Or something else, a little more creepy?), but luckily we have another one which shows off a lot more…

There we go. Once again it’s Noomi Rapace’s Elizabeth Shaw. I love the detail and lighting on the suit she’s wearing. Noomi says of her character – “I feel like my character is the heart in the movie. You follow her, and she changes. In the beginning, she’s a believer. She believes in God and she has a very strong faith. She is a scientist and an archaeologist. She’s on this mission, and she’s full of hope. In the middle of the movie, things happen and she changes into more of a warrior. And in the end, she’s such a survivor.” Sounds like she’s the Ripley of the film, if you ask me.

Looking around, we see an awfully familiar tunnel. Definitely the ship from Alien (or similar design by the same species). And, wait. WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY? The space jockeys themselves? Oh, Ridley, you big tease. Are you still insisting the Xenomorphs won’t make an appearance too? We ALL believe you.

Also starring the likes of Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pierce, and Idris Elba, Prometheus is launched onto UK screens from the 1st June.

The Weekly Ricochet is a round-up of those stories that, while interesting, don’t quite merit a page all of their own. This week we have little titbits on the Skyfall, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers, Man Of Steel, Haywire, Mad Max: Fury Road, and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Firstly, that pic up at the top is the first official shot from the new James Bond flick, Skyfall. Looks like Daniel Craig has gotten himself back in shape for 007′s new adventure.

Here’s Andrew Garfield unmasked in The Amazing Spider-Man. So far, so Tobey Maguire…

Here’s the Sentinel Of Liberty, Captain America (Chris Evans), looking a bit worse for wear in The Avengers. Joss Whedon, the director, recently revealed that The Avengers would take place from the perspective of Steve Rogers. A pretty good call, as a lot of people will be as new to this crazy world of Marvel as The Captain is.

There’s no confirmation over this shot, but it’s said to be taken from the set of Zack Snyder’s Man Of Steel. I hope that’s true because it look frickin’ EPIC.

Gina Carano, star of Bourne with a chick flick, Haywire, confirms that her voice has been altered in post-production for the film. Considering she’s a professional Mixed Martial Arts Fighter and not an actress, I don’t see anything wrong with this. Seems to me like Steven Soderbergh has been using the mix and extensive ADR to help coach a better performance from Carano. If that makes for a better film, who the hell cares?

Here’s a couple more pics of vehicles from George Miller’s long-delayed Mad Max: Fury Road.

Apparently being shipped off to Africa ready for shooting, Mad Max: Fury Road will star Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky instead of Mad Ol’ Mel Gibson.

And finally, this is a behind the scenes pic of the brilliant Rooney Mara on the set of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I’ve wanted an excuse to post it, and this seems as good as any. It appears Sony are going ahead with the sequels, though it’s looking increasingly unlikely David Fincher will return to direct.
