2012 marks the fiftieth year of super spy James Bond’s appearance on the glittering big screen. In that time the suave secret agent has helped evolve and shape the big brash action movie, making a star of grumpy Scotsman Sean Connery. As swift as Bond’s rise was his fall into camp parody with a raise of Roger Moore’s ridiculous eyebrow. He then turned serious and sullen with a serious and sullen Timothy Dalton, experienced a renaissance under the Irish charm of Pierce Brosnan, and finally a radical reboot and reinvention with latest incarnation, the ice-cold Daniel Craig (Oh, and an Aussie played him too, but you know, who cares). Somehow 007 has managed to stand the test of time and remain relevant while everything around him has changed. Or has he? Does Skyfall prove he still was it takes in the face of stiff competition from your Bournes and Batmans? Read on and find out. Read more »

Sony’s version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo didn’t exactly set cinema screens alight with its box office performance earlier in the year. It did enough, $232 million in global box office, to have people working on the follow-up The Girl Who Played With Fire (writer Steven Zallian is busy typing away) but Sony seem in no rush to get it made.
As I mentioned last week during my update on The Bourne Legacy, this is a bumper year for those of who enjoy our spy action thrillers. Skyfall is shaping up to be the best Bond film in a very long time (the IMAX trailer is mind-blowing) and the new trailer, released today, only serves to confirm that.
FIFTY YEARS. That’s how long James Bond has been on our screens. Introduced at the height of the Cold War, he’s seen out communism, disco, and reinvented himself in the face of the world’s latest global threat – terrorism. It’s amazing that an amoral British state-sanctioned assassin could have this kind of lasting world-wide appeal. Or IS it? Anyway, Skyfall is the latest in the super spy’s adventures and last week saw the release of the new poster above. Along with the poster came the announcement of the first teaser trailer, and yes, we’ve managed to get our leather-gloved paws upon it. Would you like to see? Read more »

Fincher has nearly always taken the same care with his DVD covers/artwork as he has with his films. His Fight Club brown paper package will always be a favourite of mine, as is the creepy letter cover to Zodiac. These things, I feel, add immeasurably to the film experience and I’m glad that Fincher dares to give attention to such things. Read more »
